Rhodochrosite can be found in hydrothermal vein deposits with other manganese minerals, often in lower temperature ore mines like the one in Romania where it was originally discovered. Banded rhodochrosite is also obtained from Capillitas, Argentina. It was first identified in 1813 when a sample from Cavnic, Maramureș (now part of Romania) was studied. The name comes from the Greek words ροδόν (rodon, meaning rose) and χρωσις (chrosis, meaning coloring).
