Most Boulder Opals are found in the areas around Quilpie, Yowah, and Winton in Queensland, Australia. They are excavated and mined from deep fractures in the sandstone or ironstone. What makes them so special is their unique host rock backing.  It serves a range of distinct purposes.  First, it gives Boulder Opals that extra durability over all other types of Opals.  It also contributes to their intensity of color.  Due to the way Boulder Opals form, they often have topographical features and undulating borders you don’t generally see in other types of Opals
